MOM: Film Review
Cast: Sridevi, Akshaye Khanna, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Adnan Siddiqui, Abhimanyu Singh, Sajal Ali
Direction: Ravi Udyawar
Music Director: A. R. Rahaman
Genre: Thriller, Drama
Yet another
moving performance from the iconic actress Sridevi has mesmerized the
audience. Mom is the second hindi movie after her glorious
return in “English Vinglish”. The story of the film Mom is
based on a rape case showcased from the point of view of a mother.
The story
features a daughter unwilling to accept her stepmom Devki. But when the said
daughter doesn't return from a party, her mother became frantic. She scans the
attendees and enquiries her friends but gets no answers. Soon, her worst fears
are realized when the disfigured body of the daughter (Arya) is discovered in a
ditch. She was hospitalized and saved. A legal battle follows as Arya offers a
statement pinning the perpetrators. But due to lack of incriminating evidence
against the accused leads to naught. From here on the Udyavar's directorial
debut movie can easily be guessed and that is the only negative point
for Mom.
What I like
about the movie is that Mom doesn't strictly fall into the
category of a conventional rape-and-revenge drama. It breaks free from the
genre constraints on the back of a well-defined emotional and ethical context.
It demonstrates revenge as a choice between two wrongs unglued only by their
respective degree of severity.
Sridevi in
the role of likeable-yet-strict teacher Devki is outstanding. The movie
revolves around her and she walks you through the entire gamut of emotions with
great panache. The story is of a mother who proves how a woman can carry just
about anything on her shoulders.
Alongwith
sridevi the brilliant performances of Nawazuddinn Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna and
Adnan Siddiqui who are inserted to add the comic and thriller touch to the melodrama
garnished the movie deliciously.
